Capabilities

Numerical modeling can offer valuable insight  such as visual representation of results as well as values of parameters that may be difficult to collect in a physical model. 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D models can all be used. Lab employees have extensive knowledge in software programs such as HECRAS, SRH-2D, and Flow 3D.

Previous Projects

In-Stream Rock Structures

In coordination with the United State Bureau of Reclamation many different 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D models were created to study the hydraulic impact of a variety of in-stream rock structures such as bendway weirs, rock vanes, and others similar structures on natural river systems.

Contraction Scour Analysis

In coordination with the National Cooperative Highway Research Program, numerical models were used to analyze the effect of sudden contractions in a clear-water and live-bed situation. Results of this study can be applied to river systems with sudden contractions, such as bridge abutments and similar structures.
